Neo Feng Shui: The black hat sect, Tibetan Feng Shui, intuitive Feng Shui.
We are now looking into an interesting subject: the new forms of Feng Shui that have appeared in the 20th century. Should these forms be considered and called Feng Shui. while they do not rely on century or milenia old traditions? I give you my opinion on the matter, opnion shared by most traditional Feng Shui experts and masters.
The black hat sect, also known as Bons Feng Shui, Tibetan Feng shui etc. was created a few years ago by Thomas Lin Yun. It blends ideas of an old Tibetan religion called the Black Hats, with symbolic concepts that do not take into account the Luo Pan and the directions anymore!
The idea of Mister Yun was to simplify Feng Shui to "sell" it to Westerners – and therefore to get rid of the complexity of the system. It was a conscious attend to market Feng Shui into a new, easy-to-digest form, which has very little to do with the classical teachings.
The Black hat Feng Shui is disregarded by all the authentic practitioners of classical Feng Shui, being in total opposition with the historical foundations of Feng Shui. It should not be called “Feng shui”, as it is not. Can you call a "cheese" made of processed soy and industrial oils a real vintage Cheese? Indeed you cannot!
Nevertheless it presents the « advantage » of being learned and “applied” in few hours by a western mind…and so it is very easy to market! This is quite simply "Mc Feng Shui" for traditional Feng Shui experts like I: what fast food is to traditional cuisine really! This great expression was coined by Cate Bramble by the way who has done a lot to propagate more traditional ideas.
Likewise, intuitive Feng Shui is all form and no substance. Feng Shui relies on energetic rules and pattern observed since centuries. When it becomes simply “intuitive”, it should not be called Feng Shui anymore. Historically, the methods used have always relied on calculation and measurements, not on pure “intuition”.
Some of these techniques might have a positive effect on your life. To some extent placebos do work as well. However it is a problem of labelling here: Feng Shui is historically a precise body of techniques transmitted through a lineage, not a rehash of the Law of attraction for dummies! As a Feng Shui consultant classicaly trained in Asia, by a Chinese lineage, I do not feel threatened by these forms of Feng Shui, but however sorry for the people who don't know better and believe they are investing into a traditonal form of Feng Shui.
End of the day as a Feng Shui expert I feel a karmic responsability towards my client. When I do a business or home Feng shui consultation in London or abroad I rely on techniques that have been tested over centuries of practice and on a lineage rather than on intuition and good will only…And I am grateful that all my clients understand the difference and see results.
