The 24 mountains: a map of the Chi.

Each Gua determine a sector: North, South etc. Three sub-sectors or sub-directions compose each sectors. The 24 mountains is the name of the twenty-four sub-directions of 15 degrees each. Chinese do like to give fancy names to the concepts they use!

Here is a list of the twenty-four mountains as seen on a Luo Pan.

The twenty-four mountains.

For example the West sector (Dui Gua) that goes from 247.6˚ to 292.5˚ on the compass, is actually composed of West 1, West 2 and West 3.

• West 1 is called Geng (247.6˚ – 262.5˚)

• West 2 You (262.6˚ – 277.5˚)

• West 3, Xin (277.6˚ – 292.5˚)

The Mountains represent a much more accurate mapping of the Chi and are therefore very important. A Feng Shui “expert” that does not use the 24 mountains doesn’t have a great knowledge of the Chi. The approach by sector/Gua only is very imprecise because each of the 24 mountains actually contain a different energy!

Only the 4 cardinal sectors that are:

• North 2/Zi (352.6˚ – 7.5˚)

• East 2/Mao(82.6 ˚- 97.5˚)

• South2/Wu (172.6˚ – 187.5˚)

• West 2/You (262.6 ˚- 277.5˚) are the pure Chi’s Elements.

For example Zi or North2 is 100% Water. The other mountains are actually a mix of different Chi and Elements (with the exception of North 3, Gui, also pure Water).

You understand by now how approaching a place by sectors/Gua only can lead to real mistakes. If on top of it the practitioner doesn’t know your individual chart (Bazi), then the consultation becomes pointless by its inefficiency…

Besides, the 24 mountains can also represent a very precise area where not to put a stove, or for Feng Shui Water placement to locate the appropriate Water exit for example. If the approach is based on sectors rather than mountains there is 2/3 of chance to make a mistake within the sector.

Last but not least, a Mountain difference for the main door and facing of a business can make or break the whole business!
