I’d like to know what exactly is the Chi/Qi? Or should I say “Who is Chi”?

Qi or Chi (pronounced "Chee") is a term that designs a universal energy, or life force, at work on this planet. To simplify I will use the western spelling in this site; I might also use the word energy, but bear in mind that this is a shortcut. Gi; ki; khí, are the same notion in other Asian languages. It’s definitely a what, not a who: the Chi doesn’t stand for a divinity or a spirit.

It is impossible to really summarize what the Chi is: energy is actually a poor substitute to describe it. For example there is a Chi circulating in your body, one we indentify based on the directions of the compass, but also a symbolic Chi that can be transformed through some symbols. All those aspects are called “Chi” and are part of the same concept. Prana, pranayama energeia, élan vital, pneuma, life force are some notions close to the Chi.

Where is the Chi?

The Chi is everywhere, and where there is no Chi there is no life. The Chi is both internal and external.

Internal Chi is what is treated through Chinese medicine, acupuncture, Chi Cong or Tai Chi. The acupuncture meridians for example are a mapping of the flow in internal Chi.

The external Chi is the one send to us through our surroundings: natural environment, living place, seasonal changes etc. Feng Shui treats the external Chi, and its repercussion on internal Chi for each and one of us.

Does it means that the external Chi affects you internally?

Absolutely. For example sleeping under a Chi that clash with your chart will weaken your body and might lead to illnesses. Moreover, the Chi circulating in your house will affect your whole life: relationship, wealth, work, your children development…

How to receive a good Chi?
