The Luo Shu square: a Chinese magic square
What is the Luo Shu?
The Luo Shu or Lo Shu is a Chinese mystical square/magic square. Another name for it is the Nine Halls Diagram.
The Lo shu qualifies as a magic square as the sum of all numbers in each direction is 15.The Emperor Yu supposedly discovered this pattern on the back of a turtle coming out of the Lo river.
The Luo Shu is dynamic and expresses the movement of the Chi, while the He Tu is a static form. It gives a mapping of the Chi according the period of time. The Luo Shu can therefore be compared to the Later Heaven Ba Gua, and is linked to it in Feng Shui.
The Luo Shu is therefore used for calculation of the Chi movements in used in many forms of Chinese metaphysics: Qi Men Dun Jia oracle, Flying stars charts, Direct and indirect spirit formula, auspicious/inauspicious sectors based on the Gua etc.
