So what are the rules for a good Feng shui placement with the stove?

The stove is traditionally what nourishes the whole household, so it must be respected and protected. Some locations are a big no-no in classical Feng Shui. There are specifics Mountains that create an unstable Chi if the stove is located on them. As usual the Qian area (in Northwest sector) is to be protected from the Fire Element, hence no stove over there.

It is also best for a stove not to be located on your personal Peach blossom location (it can lead to infidelity and erratic behaviour with money, like gambling). The stove should not spoil one your best Elements, especially if they are either Metal or Wood, both greatly weakened by Fire.
